Rave review for Edana's CD Launch gig

(November 18, 2011)

Minghella magic at album launch.

JAZZ singer Edana Minghella managed to pull off the tricky feat of both wrenching at your heart strings and bringing a sense of zest and fun to her packed show at Quay Arts, Newport, last Friday, to mark the release of her new album, Still on My Feet.
Edana’s record has songs that were in her brother Anthony’s films and have a special resonance following the Oscar-winning director’s death back in 2008.
The record also has a stellar contributions from jazz trumpeter Guy Barker, whose work provided some of the soundtrack of one of Anthony’s hit films, The Talented Mr Ripley.
Friday’s performance launched a series of live dates for Edana who will also be playing at Brighton, Bourne-mouth and Merton Abbey Mills, London.
Edana’s two-hour set included a heart wrenching version of Joni Mitchell’s Case of You, which reduced the audience to a stunned silence with its raw power and emotional intensity. It was an unbearably poignant few minutes, reminding us once again of the loss of Anthony. Imagine how hard that must still be for the Minghella family, many of whom were at the show. However, there were plenty of lighter moments to savour with some sassy, sexually charged numbers, which perfectly suited Edana’s bubbly personality.
Let’s also not forget the outstanding playing of the rest of the band and guest appearances by Island cellist, Chris Dare who proved, if further proof were needed, the Island is bursting at the seams with musical talent.
